About the Market
The Sparta Farmers Market is located in Historic Downtown Sparta, WI at Mueller Square & Creekside. In recent years it has expanded to both sides of The Water Street Bridge! Visit us on Saturdays 8 AM - 1 PM, May 10 - Oct 11, 2025.
The Sparta Farmers Market is a unique, producer-only market, meaning all goods are grown, made, or crafted by the vendors themselves—no resale items allowed. When you visit, you’re speaking directly with the farmer who raised the produce, the baker who made the bread, or the artist who created the work.

Each season, the market includes an educational component, using the stage to share free resources, demonstrations, and live music with the community.
The History of the Market

Reinhard Mueller pictured on right.
The Sparta, WI Farmers Market had its start in 1993 when two neighbors collaborated on an idea to find a way to distribute excess garden produce and earn a little income to pay for the seed costs. After tackling several barriers with the city with this new concept of a Farmers Market, the two women opened the first farmers market at the old Cowboy Village parking lot which today is part of the Morrow Memorial Home complex.
The following years saw the market grow both with market vendors and customers. The original location proved difficult for vendors and customers so the following year the Market moved to the north lawn area of the courthouse near the bandshell. After several years the market was asked to vacate and it found a new home across from Market Square. After a number of years the market outgrew that location and the Market moved again. Although a draw to Sparta’s downtown there was little support in helping the Market find a permanent location. Over a 26 year span the Market moved eight times within the downtown area.
In 2014, the market's welcoming atmosphere was enhanced by custom-built vendor huts, thanks to the dedication of Reinhard Mueller - which Mueller Square is named after. His vision, funding, and hands-on labor were instrumental in constructing and placing the huts, as well as supporting the market’s expansion to Creekside. The result is a vibrant community space where local food, art, education, and connection thrive. 2016 was the first year the Sparta Farmers Market filled the square and the move was an instant success! With the stage available for music, educational events, and children’s hands-on activities and a variety of vendors with a wonderful selection of produce and products, the market offers an incredible array of fun and fellowship for the public. The Sparta, WI Farmers Market is home to stay!
